A Ray of Sunshine on the Road to Chartres

Yesterday evening, a friend sent me a message as he prepared for an important personal endeavour. He was about to commence a pilgrimage to Chartres—a centuries-old journey of faith and quiet endurance—and asked how he might help me through his prayers.

There’s something profoundly moving in such a gesture. Not just the offer to pray, but the simple human act of thinking of someone else while on the road. In that moment, I felt warmed—as though a shaft of light had broken through the clouds.

The thought that someone, somewhere, is carrying me with them in spirit—ready to call upon heavens and saints on my behalf—brings with it a quiet grace. A soft brightness. A reminder that, even in moments of uncertainty, we are truly not alone.

So if one were to send a prayer from the pilgrim’s path, perhaps it could be this:

A prayer for peace—not only as a stillness within, but as a hope for all peoples, everywhere. Peace among nations, peace in the streets, peace in our restless hearts.

A prayer for prosperity—not only to re-find one’s footing and flourish beyond imagination, but that all might share in the world’s abundance, in dignity and sufficiency.

A prayer for love—not merely in the rediscovery of l’âme sœur, that longed-for kindred soul, but that love in all its forms might guide us daily—in our pursuit of peace, in our longing for justice, in our shared humanity.

Sometimes, a single message is enough to light the way.
