A Problem Shared Is a Problem Half Fared

It’s funny how we sometimes view our own lives — and especially our friendships — through the most dramatic lens available. When we’re struggling, we become experts in silent suffering. We rehearse the same lines: Don’t be a burden. They’re busy. It’ll pass. No cavalry required. And yet, even in our quietest moments, they know. Our mates always seem to sense when something is off — sometimes even before we do.

Friends. They’ve carried us through heartbreaks, job disasters, family dramas, financial catastrophes, and that unforgettable moment when we both fancied the same boy. They’ve stood beside us, bottle in hand, pouring the wine — some of it even rein — and by morning the world had quietly stitched itself back together. It didn’t end. Not this time either.

That’s what friends are for1.

But here’s the twist.

What about the friend who’s always been the strong one? The helper. The listener. The “my life is mysteriously never upside‑down” person. What happens when they needs us — and don’t yet realise they do?

Some people are so used to being everyone else’s emotional Swiss Army knife that asking for help must feel like suddenly speaking in tongues. So how do we spot their TTT — their troubles, trials and tribulations? Or really, how do we let them know we’ve spotted them? They’ve always sensed ours, so how do we gently acknowledge the elephant in the room without immediately trying to tame it?

Do we wait?

Do we inquire?

Do we hover like a cloud? — friendly cloud the non‑creepy kind!

And what about the newer friends? — the ones life or geography scattered too soon. We adore them, reply warmly when they message… and then realise we’re Olympic‑level responders but hopeless at initiating a simple ”Ciao Caro! Come stai ?” Friendship isn’t measured in years or miles or the frequency of text messages. But it does, occasionally, need a tune‑up.

So what’s the Wort zum Sonntag? What’s my almost‑sermon‑like Sunday philosophy meant to say?

It’s simple. We don’t need to know what’s wrong. Something might not even be wrong. All we need to do is check in — pick up the phone, send a message, pop round, invite them to tea. Or a pint. Or both.

No cavalry required. Maybe a bottle of (rein) wine. But presence matters most. Just be there.

Friends are like stars: you don’t always see them, but they’re always there.
